TASTE | TASTE OF TULUM

shop the post

My mother always said that if you like to eat well, you need to learn to cook. And she was right. I love to eat and so, I learned to love to cook. With all of the places I've lived, I've discovered different spices, and now one of my passions is to cook and create new recipes. My favorite type of food is Mediterranean cuisine and my latest obsession is the cookbook Jerusalem. I love Mediterranean cuisine, because it can be rather simple and focuses on the importance of the flavors and the quality of the products. I like to live and eat healthy. Right now it’s mango season here in Mexico and one of the reasons why I enjoy living here is the quality of the fruits and vegetables. This kind of quality is hard to find, even in cities like New York and Paris, where you really can get everything your heart desires.

I also love to throw dinner parties because it's a great way to connect with friends. In Germany we have a saying: You can win a man’s heart by cooking good food. Food is sensual. And since I love food, I love movies about it: Babette’s Feast (love the fact that she spent all her savings to create one amazing meal), Julie & Julia (who doesn’t like Julia Child), Chef… the list is long and could go on, but one of my all time favorites is Chocolat with Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp. I always dreamed of spending the rest of my life like this: Opening a chocolate shop somewhere in the South of France and making everybody happy with chocolate.

I am very pleased  to see that that more and more restaurants are following the farm to table trend and are even producing their own products. One of the restaurants I love in New York is ABC Kitchen (35 East 18th Street, NYC) because they do a great job with this. I also feel so lucky in that I live close to Tulum, which has not only become the best destination in Mexico, but it's also becoming more and more of a culinary destination. The chef of Noma, Rene Redzepi, just opened his first pop up restaurant Noma Mexico in Tulum which really means Tulum has arrived. We also have permanent amazing restaurants like Arca and Hartwood in Tulum.
