TRAVEL | THE JOYS OF BEING A DORKY TOURIST

Next to food, travel is my next great love. I guess they kind of go hand-in-hand though, right? I only want to travel to places where I can get a good meal.  For my Cooking Channel show, Beach Bites, I go to different beaches and eat.  Basically, it’s my dream job!

My most recent trip was to Newport, Rhode Island.  I stayed at the most picturesque, quaint hotel, the Castle Hill Inn.  The room to get is the Turret Suite.  It has a winding staircase that leads up to a marble bathroom with a huge tub and 360 degree views out onto the water.  I really liked all of the bath products, made locally from organic ingredients, called Farmaesthetics.  In the evening, sit out on the lawn and sip a local rum while watching the sunset.  It’s the greatest show on earth.

My favorite dinner in Newport came on Geoffrey Zakarian’s recommendation, The Black Pearl, in the harbor. I’ve never had better clam chowder in my life. The good news is that they sell it in a can, so you can take it home, open a good bottle of champagne, and pretend you're back on vacation.

While in Newport, it’s a must to do the Cliff Walk and visit the old mansions, like Marble House and The Breakers, on Bellevue Avenue. I know I’m a dorky tourist, but I really like wearing those headsets and listening to the stories of grandeur.
