After the horrific tragedy of Sandy Hook, I was made aware of a fledgling organization, Mom's Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, and the more I learned, the more I realized I had a passion for, and commitment to, its mission. That mission is not, in fact, oriented toward gun control but rather gun safety. Stated simply, we seek to promote keeping guns out of the hands of those who should not have them and to support legislation that makes guns safer. It is essentially an apolitical agenda and, without being presumptuous, I find it hard to imagine how the most ardent defender of the Second Amendment could oppose the concept of safety.
Mom's Demand is not focused on gun control but rather on gun safety. We are not seeking to overturn nor limit the second amendment. Our mission is simply to keep guns out of the hands of those who are patently unfit to possess weapons and to have guns registered. Universal background checks for every state are a major goal for us and most gun owners agree with us. In my view, there is no rational argument that can be posed in opposition to enhanced gun safety.
