ONE PERSON | SEVEN DAYS
MEET | MARY PEFFER
Featured 11.12-11.18.18 | If there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that if we don’t believe in ourselves, no one else will, either. It’s a life lesson that seems obvious, but try to actually put it into practice and you realize that it takes a ton of chutzpah, a thick skin and a killer work ethic to actually employ. Unless you’re Mary Peffer, then it’s just what you do. This boss babe learned the lesson early in her career from none other than designer and former Creative Director, Hedi Slimane, whom she worked under at YSL, starting out as an assistant and working her way up to become the head of American press and marketing. But before she climbed that ladder, she moved (on her own) from her hometown of Cleveland to NYC on nothing but a gut instinct. Ten years later, she did the same thing, but this time to the Left Coast, where she landed dream job after dream job, finally settling in at her current post as VP of Global Marketing for J Brand Jeans. It should also be noted that she lives by three mottos (write these down — you’re going to need them): 1. Someone is going to have your dream job, so it may as well be you; 2. Keep your side of the street clean; 3. If the answer is no, it’s not personal — you just need to rework your pitch. All of this to say this: She believes. She believes in herself, her worth and her ability, and it is infectious. Indeed, Mary Peffer is the kind of woman who makes you want to be a better person, a more evolved human — a cooler being. So sit back, relax and absorb every word she has to say because she certainly has a way with words. Welcome to Mary’s week.
