TASTE | FLOUR POWER

I am loving Israeli food and recently went to a great Israeli restaurant in Paris, Balagan (9 Rue d’Alger, Paris, 75001; +33 1 40 20 72 14). The design is gorgeous, there’s a fun party vibe and the food is deliciously spiced!

In Los Angeles, Erewhon Market (7660 Beverly Blvd A, Los Angeles; +1 323 937 0777) is my favorite place to grocery shop and also pick up healthful prepared foods.

Cookbooks: Pamela Salzman’s Kitchen Matters, Gwyneth Paltrow’s It’s All Good, Melissa Clark’s Dinner: Changing the Game and the Sweet Laurel Cookbook. I love the NYT cooking section for recipes, too.

Kitchen Staples:

My Dutch leather oven mitts from Food52, which is my favorite place to shop online for unique and beautiful kitchen items.

Staub pots. They cook beautifully and look even more beautiful on my range.

Hedley & Bennett aprons. My friend Ellen Bennett has thought of everything the restaurant chef or home cook might need in an apron, and she has a mind-boggling array of beautiful options.

JK Adams Heritage Serving Board. I love the gray tone of this board and the size is large enough for a really impressive cheese display.

Global Knives. The best quality knives with a comfortable handle for lots of chopping.

Variegated Cotton Napkins. I love the feel of these napkins as well as the fun variety of colors they come in. I like to mix and match.

Vincent Van Duysen Ceramic Bowls + Containers. They match the soft gray color of my kitchen and look gorgeous on my countertop. I store coffee and tea in them.

Murray River Pink Salt. Not all salt tastes the same by a long shot! This pink salt from Australia is habit-forming.

Nordicware Bundt Pans. Solid pans and beautiful designs for impressive bundt cakes.

AHeirloom Cake Stands. Modern, artisanal cake stands that make every cake look prettier.

When it comes to the restaurants I’m loving right now, this may sound self-serving, but I am completely obsessed with my own: Pizzana (11712 San Vicente Blvd, Los Angeles; +1 310 481 7108). I eat there as much as possible and am selfishly delighted about our new West Hollywood location that will be very close to my house! I love that the food is incredibly fresh and delicious … I crave it! It’s chic, but casual — an easy weeknight dinner with my family or a fun weekend dinner with girlfriends. Our pizzaiolo, Daniele Uditi, makes the best pizza, but you can also get a killer salad, and our wines by the glass list is incredible. I also love Croft Alley in West Hollywood (9429 Melrose Place). for breakfast and lunch. It’s simple and surprisingly good food served on paper plates — their French scramble and tuna melt are perfection. And for a healthful lunch option their kale salad with homemade turkey sausage has a bit of a Vietnamese inspired dressing – it’s super fresh and flavorful.

After my Gaggenau Coffee Maker, my most frequently used kitchen gadget is my Breville Electric Citrus Press and my Thermapen Instant Read Thermometer.

My favorite easy, weeknight recipe is barely a recipe, ha! But, I throw chicken breasts in my slow cooker with Frontera red enchilada sauce and let it slow cook all day and then shred it. I also make fresh Spanish rice in my Clay Pot Rice Cooker. Then I’ll throw some tortillas on the griddle and cook them up for my boys to make burritos. Sometimes my husband and I will join them, but I’ll use Siete Almond Flour Tortillas or we’ll throw the chicken on top of a hearty kale salad along with black beans, cotija cheese, avocado and pepitas.

I also pre-make salad dressings, and keep heartier veggies like carrots and cabbage shredded in glass containers to make it easy to throw together interesting salads. I also make double batches of soup and freeze half the batch so I always have a fresh healthy meal ready to be thawed and eaten in a pinch. I also keep binders full of recipe print outs from the web, organized according to recipes to try and family favorites.
