MEET | KENDALL CONRAD
Featured 5.6-5.12.19 | If creativity breeds creativity, then Kendall Conrad just might have a corner on the market. Born to an interior designer mother and an American matador-portrait artist-author father, Conrad grew up a fifth generation California girl who spent her formative years hanging out with literary giants like John Steinbeck and Joan Didion (NDB) and traveling the globe before she eventually settled on life as a successful fashion model (natch). But when your artistic inclinations lead you down a path less traveled, there’s no way you’re going to be satisfied with one career — you’re going to need at least three. Which is why Conrad added fashion designer (her eponymous line of clothing and accessories is a pure reflection of Kendall herself: elegant, adventurous and irreverent), semi-professional entertainer (she and her creative director husband, David Cameron, are at the epicenter of Northern California nightlife) and cookbook author (yes, cookbook author. Eat Well, Feel Well. If you don’t know, now you know) to her CV. And in case you still need convincing that Conrad is sure to be the most amazing guest at any dinner party, her penchant for parlor games and her obsession with sharks and espionage should certainly persuade you to snag the seat next to hers, because this beauty is full of surprises — in good way. Welcome to Kendall’s week.
more about kendall
Kendall Conrad combines the spirit of her adventurous heritage with her uncanny eye for elegance as the Co-Founder and Designer of her eponymous luxury leather goods brand. A fifth-generation California native, Kendall’s all-American dynamism comes from an uncommon upbringing spent riding, traveling and absorbing culture. The daughter of creative parents— Kendall’s mother, Mary, was an interior designer, while her father, Barnaby Conrad, was an American matador and celebrated portrait artist and author. Together, the couple founded the Santa Barbara Writers Conference where Kendall came of age with exposure to well-known literary figures such as John Steinbeck, William F. Buckley, James Michener, Alex Haley, Eudora Welty, Joan Didion and William Styron. Following a successful career as a fashion model in Europe and the United States, Kendall married David Cameron, a commercial director, photographer and former fashion designer. Today he serves as Creative Director and Chief Executive Officer for the KENDALL CONRAD brand. From her base in California, Kendall’s collection is a product of her own desire launched her first company under the brand name, Tauro. After a restructuring of the company in 2008, the brand was renamed KENDALL CONRAD. High demand led to the opening of the first KENDALL CONRAD store in May 2010 on Abbot Kinney Boulevard— the stomping grounds for Venice’s young international crowd. In November 2011, the brand welcomed its second boutique in the posh neighborhood marketplace-cum- hang out, The Brentwood Country Mart. Then a third store in Montecito was opened in 2014 in The Montecito Country Mart. Today, in addition to helming their own eponymous brand, Kendall and David have been selected by Caroline Belheumer, creative director of lifestyle brand Vince, to fully develop their new handbag division, designing a full range of women’s bags and accessories. Named by Vogue as one of the “10 Most Fashionable People You Need to Know on the Left Coast” and one of “LA’s Tastemakers” by Los Angeles Magazine, Kendall is also well known for her work as a contributing editor at C Magazine, her knack for stylish entertaining, as well as her Clarkson Potter published cookbook, Eat Well, Feel Well. Residing between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara with their daughters now in college, the couple socializes at the heart of an accomplished and talented West Coast design set and have been featured in W, Vogue, Town and Country and The New York Times: T Magazine.
