Due to my busy schedule, I eat out more often than I eat in, but the tide is slowly changing because I am obsessed with two new cookbooks from a few of my favorite people. The lovely Athena Calderone recently published her first cookbook, Cook Beautiful, in which truly gorgeous recipes are organized seasonally. Her perfected visual style from her blog, EyeSwoon, is on full display in page after page. A favorite recipe is her Shaved Brussles Sprouts with Olives and Pine Nuts. Alison Roman, badass friend and former Bon Appetit food editor, offers super accessible recipes for the everyday meal at home in her book Dining In. I have been making her Vinegar-Braised Chicken all winter, and you’ll recognize her hand in many of your favorite Bon Appetit recipes from recent years.
When I am cooking at home, what I’m eating is just as important as what I’m eating on. I’m obsessed with rustic ceramics, and I pick up new serving dishes wherever I happen upon them. Some of my recent favorites are from New Jersey’s Jono Pandolfi —you’ll recognize his wares at New York restaurants Eleven Madison Park and Chef’s Club, as well as MM Clay, who supplies San Francisco’s State Bird Provisions with their beautiful assortment of modern Dim Sum dishes.
